New update for Simplex Spelling HD - Dolch Sight Words
We are excited to have recently released a major new update for Simplex Spelling HD - Dolch Sight Words. Below are some of the improvements in the new version 2.0 update:
- New user interface that allows for a larger keyboard.
- Improved the graphics.
- Added the ability to export student progress reports (accessed from the email button on the Main Menu).
- Added full support for both iPad retina display and iPhone 5.
- Added the ability to set the number of times a word must be spelled correctly in order to be mastered.
- Added the ability to view the missed words upon reaching the end of a word list.
- Added support for separate beginning /r/ sound and vowel controlled 'r' sounds.
- Improved the behavior of the backspace key to initially skip over correct letters.
- Keyboard now defaults to QWERTY (this can be changed back to alphabetical in the settings menu).
- The app now prompts the user to adjust the app settings to their liking immediately upon creating a new user account.
- Other minor improvements and bug fixes.
We are also thrilled that Apple has featured the new version of Simplex Spelling as New & Noteworthy in a number of countries including the US, UK and Ireland. In addition three of the Simplex Spelling apps are being featured under the "Spelling Bees" spotlight in a number of countries.

Be sure to check it out along with the other great apps they have discovered that have really helped people with autism and other special needs. Wynsum Arts also has an app called i.AM Search that allows you to create a custom profile for each child that helps parents and educators sort through the thousands of possible apps for the one that's exactly right for a child's specific needs.

Want your child to learn phonics and word building? KinderTown suggests using Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 & 2 with activities.

The iMums are four mothers from different parts of the world that are dedicated to educating parents about the best digital stories, educational apps, fun games and technology products available for their children.
If you are looking for a series of apps that actually teaches your child how to spell (rather than just memorizing spelling lists) you can't go wrong with the Simplex Spelling series. If you have a child in 3rd grade up ready to tackle more complex spelling rules then this is a must have app.
This app has a huge amount of material in it, and covers a whole year of spelling lessons. As well as working on phonics, it also covers syllables, spelling rules, contractions and the capitalization of proper nouns. It is useful in the classroom as well as the home setting as it supports up to 40 student profiles.
Where the Simplex Spelling apps excel is teaching your child how to spell, and this app moves on from the basics taught in the previous apps in the series, to teaching quite complicated phonemes. I really like how individualized the hint system is.

Pyxwise is pleased to announce the release of our latest update (1.4.4) to Simplex Spelling Phonics 1. This latest update includes a number of improvements including:
- Added the ability to set the number of times a word must be spelled correctly before it will be considered "mastered" (default is three times).
- Added the ability to view the contents of each spelling list from the main menu.
- Added the ability to review what words were missed upon reaching the end of a word list.
- Added new information about closed syllables to a couple of the earlier lessons.
- Improved the behavior of the backspace key to initially skip over correct letters.
- Added new silent 'e' spelling tips to a few words.
- Directed all the links in the email/contacts menu to child safe web pages that cannot be navigated away from.
- Added a "tips" button to the email/contacts menu that includes new hints and tips for using Simplex Spelling.
- Due to popular demand, the keyboard now defaults to QWERTY (it can be changed back to alphabetical in the settings menu).

"The Hint Button is one of the biggest reasons why I love this spelling application. When the user taps it, a small silver button will appear under the spaces where the designated letters in the word are to show up. Tapping on these small silver buttons will bring up possible combinations for the phonic that the particular letter represents."

"Understanding the sounds attached to letters and learning to sound out words are necessary skills for students to become independent readers. Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 makes it easy for students to practice these critical skills while boosting confidence. The app helps bridge the gap between phonemic awareness and phonics. 450 high-frequency words are taught in forty-two spelling lists focused on specific concepts such as short vowel sounds, long vowel sounds, phonograms (letters that represent the sound such as "–ump" in bump), and diphthongs (gliding vowels such as cow).
The interface is clean and the navigation is simple enough for a child to work independently without a teacher or parent (after the student views the helpful introduction lesson). A soothing voice prompt presents the word to spell and then uses the word in a sentence. After the student attempts to spell the spoken word by clicking or dragging and dropping letters into the tiles provided, color-coded letter tiles reveal incorrect / placement issues allowing the student to achieve success on every word presented. We are pleased to announce that Apple has featured Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 as "New & Noteworthy" under the education category in the US and 18 countries.
Also, Mitchell Cogert from the site "Kids Best iPad Apps" was kind enough to put together a short demonstration video of Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 on his "Top Ten New & Noteworthy" list. There is a slight audio stutter in the video, but Mitchell assures me that it was an audio recording issue and not an issue with the app itself.

This app is very well made, easy to use, and engaging. Simplex Spelling would be especially useful in the classroom for teachers.
Technology pessimists in education will say that students using iPads are just playing games. Apps, like this one, that give teachers data to show student's progress help prove the pessimists wrong.

Not only does this app help students learn spelling constructs, but it also teaches all of the sounds in words which will, fingers crossed, result in increased decoding skills. The fine people over at BridgingApps were kind enough to perform a trial with their students using Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 and have posted a review. BridgingApps felt that Simplex Spelling works well for "English Language Arts Reading Foundational Skills" for the Common Core Standards. Please stop by their great site to check out the full review.
